My very first newsletter

This is my very 1st newsletter!!

Here (apart from other tings) I’ll share the new and upcoming laws and decisions given by courts, & how they are going to effect your day to day life.

So here goes, my first one.

There was a recent compromise between SAG and APTA regarding bonus payment for actors and performers. Some have supported it while many have criticised it.

What’s the crux of it?

Screen Actors Guild (SAG) had been on a 100+ day strike, asking for revenue sharing from the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). The stalemate was recently concluded with the AMPTP agreeing on making bonus payments.

According to the terms, actors in shows that capture the attention of 20% of a platform's subscribers are eligible for a portion of this bonus.

This also allows performers a share in the revenue generated by streaming platforms like Netflix and Prime.

They are also going to have a significant say in how their names are used with respect to AI, like the use of their faces for "synthetic performances “ through generative AI

What should you care?

The additional burden on OTTs may mean:

  1. Subscription hike- Higher monthly/ annual subscriptions fee for consumers to offset the additional expenses.

  2. Content quality- Platforms might prioritize content that attracts a larger audience, potentially impacting the diversity and uniqueness of the available shows and movies.

  3. Smaller creators will find it hard to compete with larger, & more popular shows & production houses.

  4. Setting a precedent- Widespread implications for how content creators, actors, and other industry professionals negotiate present & future compensation.

  5. Content Prioritization: Platforms might favor producing mainstream, audience-attracting content to maximize bonus payments, potentially limiting the variety of niche or independent productions available to viewers.

That’s it.

This was my first one!!
